PALEOLITHIC and NEOLITHIC: TOOLS and ART, by Rebeca de Paz

This activity is thought to be done in the active learning (interaction and participation) following the UDL principles looking for students’ participation, acquisition of competence and skills and learning to learn.

We are going to focus on the 1st of ESO History class. We are studying Prehistory and we are going to make a comparison of the Palaeolithic and Neolithic tools by making these tools in nowadays materials as clay, play dough or recycled plastic.

Aims of the activity:

- Recognise the different tools used in Prehistory
- Difference the different periods of Prehistory and their characteristics.
- Stablish comparison with nowadays tools.
- Use specific vocabulary in English
- Interact with classmates

Description of the activity:

After they have been studied the different periods of Prehistory, they will be shown a power point presentation in which we can see two pictures of a Paleolithic settlement and a Neolithic village. They will be asked for locate the different tools that appear on them and they have to make a table with the name, the function and the material. The will do it in groups encouraging active reading and cooperative learning and active writing.

Then, once they have learned about the tools, we are going to engage them giving them multiple means of representation by promoting the use of other materials: they have to make their own prehistoric tools, so that they can understand more about the everyday life in a Palaeolithic settlement or Neolithic village.

After they make their tools, in which we spend two classes, they have to present the tools to the rest of the class in the way they feel more comfortable: power point, Canva, just oral…offering options to demonstrate their learning in various ways. Moreover, we can evaluate their speaking skills at the same time. Here you can see some example of these tools and the students did.
