UDL ACTIVITY
Sheila Aragonés López
Introduction
The activity that I have planned following the UDL principles is a learning situation in which the students will participate in a simulated accident to practice first-aid, using the English language in the process.
Aims
Employ the English language in everyday situations.
Work and interact with teammates to reach the specified goals.
Follow or dictate steps in English.
Learn and practice first-aid skills in simulated situations.
Contents
First-aid vocabulary related to accidents.
Emergency steps to follow in an accident.
Recovery position.
Teamwork and interaction.
Methodology
Learning situation: a learning situation is a condition or environment where all the learning elements (those necessary to promote learning) are present: the teacher, the learners, the subject matter, the teaching materials or equipment and the physical facilities. All of them are included in a dynamic relationship throughout the course of the lesson, in order to create a meaningful situation (related to real-life or everyday events) which requires a solution or the performance of certain tasks that produce learning in the students. This type of methodology greatly covers most of the guidelines of UDL, as it is specified in this task’s step 7.
Cooperative learning: the students will participate in role-playing situations in which they will have to work as a team. Therefore, teamwork, interaction and equal cooperation will be necessary for this activity.
Description of the activity After watching and educative video about first-aid and writing down the steps for the recovery position, the students will be divided into groups of three and each of them will perform different roles within a simulated accident: an unconscious victim, the step reader and the active member.
The main goal of the activity is to follow the steps to perform first-aid and put the victim in the recovery position. To treat the victim, the step reader will read the written emergency procedures in English for the active member to follow:
- Secure the casualty.
- Call 112 with a toy phone or an object that simulates a phone (pencil case, for example).
- Place the victim in the recovery position.
The step reader has to make sure that the active member understands their indications, so that the emergency treatment is performed adequately without missing any step. Once the first role-players finish the procedure once, they change roles and repeat until all members have performed all the tasks of each role.
Assessment Once all the groups finish their simulations, they will be given some minutes to assess each other’s performances, proposing improvements which they will later put in common with the rest of the class
