The human karyotype and ideogram

Metacentric chromosomes

Mutations

Diseases and conditions related to chromosomal abnormalities.

Description of the activity:

The aim of this activity is to get everyone's hands dirty by working in groups with manipulatives to solve a real-life problem.

Several slides with different human idiograms will be presented to the students. As example:

Students will be divided into groups of three and cards like the ones below will be distributed to each group (1 card per group). All cards will be different from each other.

Students will have to cut out the chromosomes from the card with scissors, rearrange them and glue them on a white piece of paper to create an idiogram like the ones presented as an example. They will then analyse the resulting karyotype and guess which chromosomal abnormality is present.

Finally, each group will have to search for information on the main symptoms related to the genetic disorder found and present it to the rest of the class. For this last task, they can choose between an oral presentation with/without visual support, a self-recorded video or a podcast.

The activity contributes to the three kinds of networks in Universal Design for Learning

1. Engagement: this activity represents a real-life situation in a genetic analysis laboratory, where the karyotype of a patient has to be analysed, which is supposed to be very motivational for a Biology student in 4ºESO.

2. Recognition-representation: information is presented in different formats, using images in PowerPoint to explain what a karyotype and idiogram is but also providing physical material (chromosomes represented in paper) for a hands-on learning experience.

3. Action and expression: students are given the chance to submit their results choosing between different ways of presentation (speech, video or podcast).
